Guayaba, or guava in English, is a tropical fruit known for its intense fragrance and unique, sweet taste. The flesh can be shades of pink, white, pink, yellow, or orange. My favorite is the pink one!

I grew up eating them in Mexico all the time. It’s one of my favorite fruits! I love to eat them whole, as jam or in this delicious agua fresca.

This homemade guava drink is great to experience new flavors and textures. While the seeds themselves are edible (I love the crunchy texture when I eat the raw fruit!), not everyone is a fan of crunching on them among the pulp. We will be making sure to get all the yellow goodness off the seeds without actually using them in our juice.

Why you’ll love it

  • You can combine guava with all sorts of flavors – like pineapple and mango! But where this vitamin c rich fruit really shines is when you are tasting it all on its own. There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a cup of fresh-squeezed juice.
  • Make a large pitcher and share in your next gathering for an instant hit!
  • The recipe is easy to make and it’s a great way to enjoy with meals or just on its own.

Ingredients

To make the perfect Agua de Guayaba, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Ripe Guava: Choose ripe guavas for the best flavor. You’ll need about 6-7 guavas.
  • Water
  • Sugar or honey. For a sugar free drink you may use your favorite no calorie sweetener.
  • Lime or lemon: A squeeze of fresh lime juice adds a zesty twist to the beverage. This ingredient is optional but highly recommended!

Guava buying guide

Buying the perfect guava is crucial to ensure you get the best flavor and quality. Here’s how to choose and buy guavas:

  1. The Color: Look for guavas that have vibrant green or yellow skin, depending on the variety. Avoid guavas with dull or overly wrinkled skin. A ripe guava should give slightly when you apply gentle pressure.
  2. The Texture: Gently squeeze the guava. It should be slightly soft to the touch without being mushy. A firm guava may need some time to ripen, while a too-soft guava might be overripe. A few minor blemishes on the skin are normal, but avoid guavas with extensive damage.
  3. The Fragrance: The perfect fruit will emit a sweet, tropical fragrance. If it has no aroma, it may not be fully ripe.
  4. The Variety: Guavas come in various types, such as white or pink-fleshed. Choose the variety that suits your taste preferences. White guavas are typically sweeter, while pink guavas have a slightly tangy flavor.

  • Squeeze fresh lime juice if using any, stir and taste. If it needs more sugar, add a little bit at the time to your liking.
  • Transfer the mixture into a large jar or pitcher refrigerate the Agua de Guayaba until it’s well chilled. Serve in a glass with cubed ice and enjoy!

Tips and Notes

  • Make A Concentrate: You can make a guava juice concentrate by simply making guava puree! Simply blend the guavas without water then strain. Freeze into cubes to have passion fruit juice at the ready anytime. Just add water!
  • Keep leftover guava juice in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze the juice for longer storage. I suggest using an ice cube tray. Transfer frozen cubes to a freezer storage bag. Keep frozen for up to 6 months.

Serving Suggestions

Agua de Guayaba pairs wonderfully with many Mexican dishes. It’s a common sight on tables alongside tacos, tamales, enchiladas and others. Its sweet and tangy flavor complements spicy foods, making it the perfect beverage to balance the heat.

This drink is so refreshing! Thank you for sharing this recipe and opening my mind to something beyond lemonade!

    1. Thanks for the question! Homemade guava puree is only one ingredient: ripe guava. This puree serves as the base for various guava recipes, including guava jam, guava paste, and guava juice. To make the guava puree, just blend the flesh of the guava with a little water. Enough to blend well and that’s it!

      Enjoy!
