Why this recipe works

  • This beverage is naturally gluten-free, fat-free and full of nutrients!
  • It’s an easy way to make a large pitcher and drink throughout the day. This recipe makes about 7 cups of water.
  • By using simple syrup, you can make this agua de chía with cold water and start drinking right away! When using regular sugar, use at room temperature water in order to make sure it dissolves well.

Ingredients

  • Chia seeds
  • Cold water
  • Limes: make sure they’re juicy. When buying, select the ones with soft skin and not hard when squeezed.
  • Simple syrup (preferred) or ½ cup sugar. Other options are brown sugar, agave or no calorie sweetener like stevia).

Garnishes:

  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Lime or lemon slices
  • Cucumber slices

The secret to achieving a perfectly sweetened drink is by using simple syrup. This ensures that the sweetness is evenly distributed when mixed with cold water instead of sugar that sinks to the bottom.

This is a visual overview of the steps to make this recipe. See the detailed list of ingredients & instructions in the recipe card below.

A small jar filled with hydrated chia seeds.
  1. In a medium jar (with tight-fitting lid), add the chia seeds and 1 cup warm water. Close the lid and shake the container for at least 15 seconds. Place it in the fridge for at least one hour. It’s done when all the liquid is absorbed by the seeds.

  1. Taste and adjust the sweetness to your preferences if it’s tart. Add more water if you would like it to be more diluted (though note that when you add ice, it will melt and naturally dilute the agua fresca)

How to Store

  • Fridge: Fresh Agua Con Chia should be stored in an airtight container, such as a glass jar or plastic bottle, and refrigerated immediately after it is made. The container should be tightly sealed to prevent air from entering, which can cause the juice to spoil more quickly. It last in the fridge 2 to 3 days.
  • Freezer: Use a freezer-safe container like a plastic jug. It’s important to leave some space at the top of the container as the juice will expand when it freezes.
  • Defrosting: Thaw in the fridge overnight. Alternatively, you can also thaw it at room temperature for a few hours.

Variations

This agua fresca is a versatile and can be customized to suit your taste. Here are a few variations you can try:

  • Add sparkling water for a fizzy twist.
  • Infuse the water with fresh herbs like mint for a unique flavor.
  • Mix in fruit juice like strawberry or raspberry for a fruity kick.

How to get the most juice out of a lime

If you want to get the most juice out of your lime, there are a few tips and tricks you can use to make the process easier and more efficient. Take a look!

  1. Roll it: Roll your lime on a hard surface with your hand to break down the pulp and make the juice easier to extract. This can be done before or after cutting the lemon.
  2. Microwave it: If you’re in a hurry, you can microwave your lemon for 10-15 seconds to help it release more juice. Be sure to cut the lime in half before microwaving it.
  3. Use a citrus reamer: A citrus reamer is a handy tool that can help you get every last drop of juice out of your lime. Simply cut your lemon in half, place it on top of the reamer, and twist it back and forth to extract the juice.
  4. Squeeze it: If you don’t have a citrus reamer, you can squeeze your lime by hand or with a juicer. To do this, cut your lime in half and use a fork or squeezer to press down on the fruit and extract the juice.
  5. Heat it up: If your lime is cold, you can try warming it up by placing it in warm water for a few minutes. This can help the juice flow more easily.
  6. Use a mesh strainer: If you want to remove any pulp or seeds from your lime juice, you can strain it through a mesh strainer.

This Agua Con Chia y Limon is the perfect way to stay hydrated, nourished while drinking something light and delicious. This recipe is simple and easy to make on a hot day!
6 glasses

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp Chia seeds
  • 6 cups water (1.5 liters)
  • 5 large limes
  • ½ cup simple syrup or ½ cup sugar (or your favorite sweetener according to taste).

Instructions

  • In a medium jar (with tight-fitting lid), add the chia seeds and 1 cup warm water. Close the lid and shake the container for at least 15 seconds. Place it in the fridge for at least one hour.
    3 Tbsp Chia seeds
  • In a large pitcher, add the soaked chia seeds and just enough water to cover them. Mix the chia seeds with a fork to remove any lumps.
  • Add the rest of the cold water and the lime juice. Then add the simple syrup and mix. Taste and adjust the sweetness if needed. Add more water if you would like it to be more diluted (though note that when you add ice, it will melt and naturally dilute the agua fresca).
6 cups water (1.5 liters), 5 large limes, ½ cup simple syrup or ½ cup sugar (or your favorite sweetener according to taste).
  • Serve with ice and sliced limes.

Muy Delish Notes:

The longer you leave the chia seed to soak for, the better, but if you are in a rush you can leave them for 10 minutes, but just make sure that gives them a good mixing and swishing to ensure that the chia seeds can soak up as much water as possible.
