Tamarindo Drink
A delicious Mexican meal isn’t complete complete without a great agua fresca or lemonade! If we’re having friends over, I like to serve Agua De Tamarindo from a pitcher so that guests can refill at will and I don’t have to run in and out of the kitchen frequently.
Make ahead and serve a large number of guests with this classic agua fresca that’s so easy to sip!
Why you’ll love it!
There are many recipes you can make with tamarindo as it is a very popular fruit in Mexico. This agua is one of them but you could also make paletas, raspados, candy, even chamoy. I hope you try some of those recipes if you end up with extra pods. They’re are delicious!

Dietary Considerations
Did you know?
Tamarindo is a healthy fruit? Its pulp is rich in vitamins A and C, fiber, antioxidants and minerals, being excellent for eye and heart health. It helps to reduce “bad” cholesterol, it has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, it strengthens the immune system plus many other good things!
Ingredients
- Tamarind – You can make this agua fresca by making homemade tamarind paste or store bought concentrate.
- The sweetener – simple syrup or sugar. I prefer to use simple syrup to make sure the sugar dissolves completely and will sweeten the tamarindo perfectly.
- Water – no explanation needed 🙂
How to Make a Agua De Tamarindo
- Make the paste – If you’re using homemade pulp, follow this recipe for tamarindo paste or portion 4 teaspoons of store bought tamarindo concentrate.
- In a large pitcher, add the paste.
- Sweeten – Add the water and simple syrup to the pitcher with the ice.
- Mix everything together with a wooden spoon until combined.
- Serve over ice and enjoy!
Note that if you’re using tamarindo concentrate, the drink will be darker than if using pulp. The good news is that flavor does not change!
Chef’s Tips
What to serve with Tamarind Water
Aguas Frescas are always best served in a clear glass pitcher or drink dispenser. It showcases the beauty of the colors and allows people to serve themselves!
You can serve agua de tamarindo with so many dishes. Below are the recipes I suggest serving with this recipe.
How to Store This Tamarindo Drink
- Refrigerate – A pitcher of this Agua Fresca can last in the fridge for up to 3 days. Make sure to give it a good stir prior to serving again.
- Freeze – I really doubt you’ll have leftovers, but if you do you can store them in the freezer for up to three months. Freeze in an airtight plastic container. When ready to use, take out and let thaw in the refrigerator. Note that the flavor may be slightly altered so it’s always better to drink it fresh.

1/4 cup is not the same as 4 teaspoons (tsps). Which one is correct in the recipe?
This will be my new official summer drink! I love the flavor and texture of the tamarind…so good! Thanks for the recipe!
This is so delicious and refreshing, just the perfect drink all summer long!
My girlfriends going to love this. I just saved it on my list to make this weekend. We are planning a big birthday celebration. Thanks for the idea. Looks refreshing.
I need this so much right now! It is so hot outside that I can barely breathe… so this agua would work so well right now!
This drink is something new to me. Looks so beautiful and delicious. Thanks for sharing.
It’s such an easy recipe and really love that it makes a pitcher. It’s a very refreshing drink and you can’t have just one glass. Will be making this often.
Freeze some agua tamarindo in ice cube trays & use those to chill a pitcher full or to make a slushy. No dilution! My freezer is full of baggies containing cubes of coffee, milk, yogurt, various fruits, and electrolyte replenishment. Grab the smoothie box, & blend away. Frozen horchata is wonderful on hot days, a shot of alcohol evolves into adult treat. Or tasty sorbet!
Beautiful and delicious tamarindo drink! I like to make paletas with it too. Thanks for the recipe.
Thank you so much Laura!
