Did you know?

Tamarindo is a healthy fruit? Its pulp is rich in vitamins A and C, fiber, antioxidants and minerals, being excellent for eye and heart health. It helps to reduce “bad” cholesterol, it has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, it strengthens the immune system plus many other good things!

Ingredients

  • Tamarind – You can make this agua fresca by making homemade tamarind paste or store bought concentrate.
  • The sweetener simple syrup or sugar. I prefer to use simple syrup to make sure the sugar dissolves completely and will sweeten the tamarindo perfectly.
  • Water – no explanation needed 🙂

How to Make a Agua De Tamarindo

  1. Make the paste – If you’re using homemade pulp, follow this recipe for tamarindo paste or portion 4 teaspoons of store bought tamarindo concentrate.
  2. In a large pitcher, add the paste.
  3. Sweeten – Add the water and simple syrup to the pitcher with the ice.
  4. Mix everything together with a wooden spoon until combined.
  5. Serve over ice and enjoy!

Note that if you’re using tamarindo concentrate, the drink will be darker than if using pulp. The good news is that flavor does not change!

Chef’s Tips

  • Wait to add ice. Add ice to the pitcher if you decide to serve the drink immediately. If you are going to serve the tamarind water later, wait to add the ice to the pitcher until right before serving. You don’t want to water down your drink!
  • Change things up. If you want to jazz up your homemade tamarind water feel free to add a couple tablespoons of fresh lime juice to your mix for a twist.
  • Make it into a slushy. Add a cup of fresh tamarindo water and 1/2 cup of ice to a high speed blender and blend until smooth for a delicious frozen slushy!
  • Make it into paletas. These tamarindo paletas are so refreshing and fun to eat.
  • Add chamoy and chili lime seasoning to the edge of the glass.

What to serve with Tamarind Water

Aguas Frescas are always best served in a clear glass pitcher or drink dispenser. It showcases the beauty of the colors and allows people to serve themselves!

You can serve agua de tamarindo with so many dishes. Below are the recipes I suggest serving with this recipe.

How to Store This Tamarindo Drink

  • Refrigerate – A pitcher of this Agua Fresca can last in the fridge for up to 3 days. Make sure to give it a good stir prior to serving again.
  • Freeze – I really doubt you’ll have leftovers, but if you do you can store them in the freezer for up to three months. Freeze in an airtight plastic container. When ready to use, take out and let thaw in the refrigerator. Note that the flavor may be slightly altered so it’s always better to drink it fresh.

Absolutely delicious recipe!! Making the homemade tamarind paste really gives the drink a much better taste. Very time consuming but totally worth it! My only issue with this recipe is for some reason I taste the sugar more than the tamarind? I make 3x the original recipe so I’m not sure if than makes a really big difference but I prefer to just put 1 cup of sugar than 2.25 cups.

It’s such an easy recipe and really love that it makes a pitcher. It’s a very refreshing drink and you can’t have just one glass. Will be making this often.

Freeze some agua tamarindo in ice cube trays & use those to chill a pitcher full or to make a slushy. No dilution! My freezer is full of baggies containing cubes of coffee, milk, yogurt, various fruits, and electrolyte replenishment. Grab the smoothie box, & blend away. Frozen horchata is wonderful on hot days, a shot of alcohol evolves into adult treat. Or tasty sorbet!
